Before I start on DIY face masks, let me give you a little backstory. I will be the first to raise my hand up and admit that I’m a sucker for good skincare. Ever since childhood my mother had good skincare habits drilled into my head: drink lots of water, wear sunscreen, do not touch your face with dirty hands, and drink lots of water.
When puberty hit and my hormones started to freak out on my skin, I had to step up my skincare regime to the oldie but goodie 3-step regime—cleanse, toner, moisturise. As I get older, I gradually develop more experience with skincare and my relationship with my skin moved on from its initial volatile love-hate dynamic to more of a mature married couple that understand each other’s unique communication pattern. I started to introduce double cleansing, exfoliation, essences, serums and face masks.
Although I am now able to purchase high-end skincare products, there is still nothing I adore more than affordable but effective skincare. Who has the budget for a $50 caviar gold-infused diamond facial sheet mask? Not me. Use three times a week for best results? I’m outta here.
That’s why today I really want to share with you one of the skincare habits I developed during my university days and that is making my own DIY face masks! I mean, who knew avocado can be a great ingredient to moisturise dry skin and also make up a mean breakfast toast when topped with soft poached egg? I certainly didn’t!
Whether you have dry skin, sensitive skin, acne-prone skin, or you have no skin problems but you love a good skincare tip, there is something in this post for everyone. #1 Skin Detox with Bentonite Clay Mask
Our skin is exposed to pollutants and harmful chemicals on the daily. This can generate free radicals on the skin that will in turn break down the natural barriers of your skin and accelerate skin aging. Yikes! #2 Brighten up, pumpkin!
Turns out pumpkins are great as a classic Halloween prop and also a powerful face mask ingredient! This orange plant is chock-full of nutrients when consumed and when you apply it to your face. Pumpkin is especially great to brighten up and even your skin tone because it contains tons of natural fruit enzymes and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) that aid in increasing cell turnover and removing dead skin cells from the top most layer of your skin. Pumpkin is also full of Vitamin C, a mighty antioxidant and also Vitamin A derivatives. This dynamic duo work together to boost your skin’s collagen, soften your skin and prevent tell-tale signs of aging. When used topically, the small molecular structure of pumpkin can penetrate deeper into the skin and thus, this fall favourite is great for treating dull and uneven complexion and even aging skin!

I have really dry, sensitive skin and it worsens every winter. One of the methods I’ve used that actually soothes and moisturises my parched skin is homemade avocado masks. The yummy avocado has tons of good fats that moisturises your skin and in turn prevent dehydration that could lead to premature aging. The powerful combo of Vitamin C and Vitamin E found in avocados also help prevent aging, brightens up your skin and moisturises. If you combine avocado with apple cider vinegar and cucumbers, this potent mask can moisturise, treat blemishes, restore your skin’s PH balance, soothe and heal your skin.

#4 Wake up with coffee

#5 Exfoliate with oats
Another breakfast favourite. This baby is one of my favourite ingredients when it comes to exfoliating my skin.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO EXFOLIATE?
❀ Exfoliation removes debris, dirt, excess oil and dead skin cells sitting on your skin. This encourages new skin cells turnover.
❀ Breaks up pigmentation, thus reduces hyperpigmentation and evens out skin tone.
❀ Helps to draw out congestion of pores and clears skin.
❀ When done not frequently and properly, helps with dry flaky skin by removing dead skin. Thus, your moisturisers and serums can penetrate into skin.
This natural grain also contains avenanthramides, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that soothe itchy, dry and irritated skin. However, it’s not just for dry skin. If you have oily, acne-prone skin, oatmeal is amazing in absorbing the excess oil on your skin’s surface. #6 Root for clear, glowing skin
Turmeric root, that is. If you’re from South Asia, I’m sure you’re well familiar with the benefits of this ginger-look-alike.
Growing up in Malaysia, I’m very aware in the healing and medicinal properties of turmeric. This ingredient is added in curries, some drinks, and of course, beauty rituals such as face masks.
